Further ensuring that 12 miles northwestern Wisconsin’s Totogatic River will remain undeveloped, 2,100 acres of adjacent land was recently bought by The Conservation Fund and then sold to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, according to The Duluth News Tribune.

The land in Douglas and Washburn counties was bought from Wausau Paper Co. for $3.8 million. The DNR used money from the Knowles-Nelson State Stewardship Fund for the purchase. Additional funding came from the Conservation Fund in partnership with the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation’s Upper Midwest Wildlife Initiative and the McKnight Foundation.

Last year much of the 70-mile Totogatic River, which flows into Burnett County and the St. Croix River, was designated a state Wild and Scenic River. That designation will require the DNR to manage the manage the newly acquired land hunting, fishing, trapping, canoeing, kayaking and hiking.
